⇒LITHOPHYTE, subst. masc.
A. — ZOOL. Genre de polypier marin arborescent ayant des caractéristiques communes avec les coraux et les madrépores. Les coraux et les autres zoophytes et lithophytes ont des parties dures, tantôt cornées, tantôt calcaires, tantôt spongieuses, mais qui croissent par simple juxta-position, ou tout au plus par développement successif de plusieurs couches, comme les coquilles (CUVIER, Anat. comp., t. 1, 1805, p. 122).
B. — BOT. ,,Plante qui aime la pierre. Dépourvue d'appareil absorbant. Utilise les substances dissoutes dans l'eau de pluie et de rosée qui couvre les pierres`` (PLAIS.-CAILL. 1958).

Composé des élém. formants litho- (v. lithographie) et -phyte (gr. - de « végétal »); déjà en angl. en 1646 pour la forme 1 (v. NED).
